Teaching in Modern Icelandic: Ms Vicky Cribb

Modern Icelandic is remarkably similar to Old Icelandic, having changed little in the intervening centuries. As a result, a knowledge of the modern language can be extremely useful for those studying Old Norse.

The beginners’ course in Modern Icelandic is intended as a fun introduction to understanding and speaking the modern language. The aim is to provide students with a grounding in the grammar as well as teaching them useful phrases to help them get by next time they visit Iceland. Lessons consist of a mixture of comprehension, speaking practice, grammar explanation and grammar practice. The course should provide students with a good base for continuing their studies, for example by applying for the University of Iceland summer course in Icelandic.

The Advanced Modern Icelandic class is primarily a conversation class for students with relatively good knowledge of either or both the written and spoken language.  The students work on their Modern Icelandic pronunciation through flowing conversation and reading of short passages.  Each class focuses on a specific theme - building up advanced vocabulary for that specific theme.  The class is taught entirely in Icelandic.
