‘Bitter is the wind tonight’: A stormy night protects against raiding

This well-known stanza is an anonymous ninth-century composition. It is found as a marginal entry in Codex Sangallensis 904 folio 112 in the Stiftsbibliothek of St Paul which contains a Latin grammatical tract heavily glossed with Old Irish. It celebrates a stormy night as protection against ‘the fierce warriors of Lothlind’ and may provide a dramatic record of one scribes’s reaction to ninth-century Viking raids.
